Overview of Karen Blixen Museum

The Karen Blixen Museum is one of Nairobi’s most visited cultural attractions, located in the quiet suburb of Karen, about 10 km from Nairobi. Set against the backdrop of the Ngong Hills, the museum is housed in the former home of Danish author Karen Blixen, best known for her memoir Out of Africa.

History of the Museum

The farmhouse was built in 1912 by a Swedish settler and became home to Karen Blixen and her husband, Baron Bror Blixen, in 1917. The couple managed a coffee plantation on the surrounding estate until Karen left Kenya in 1931.

Her book Out of Africa, published in 1937, recounted her years in Kenya and was later adapted into the 1985 Oscar-winning film starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford.

The property changed ownership several times before being gifted to the Kenyan government in 1964. In 1986, it was opened to the public as a museum under the National Museums of Kenya.

What to See

Visitors can walk through the original colonial house, much of which is preserved as it was during Blixen’s time in Kenya. Key highlights include:

  • Original furniture and artifacts: household items, photographs, and personal belongings.
  • Oil paintings created by Karen Blixen.
  • Coffee-making equipment, such as a drying plant and farm carriages.
  • The gardens with sweeping lawns and views of the Ngong Hills.

Nearby is the Swedo House, built in 1912 for the Swedish manager of the coffee plantation.

Professional guides lead tours of the house and grounds, offering detailed stories about Karen Blixen’s life, her struggles on the coffee farm, and the inspiration behind her writing. Tours take about an hour and bring the history of the place vividly to life.
