Overview of Kiambethu Farm

Just a short drive from Nairobi, Kiambethu Farm in Limuru offers a serene and authentic glimpse into life on one of Kenya’s oldest tea estates. Perched at 7,200 feet above sea level, the farm enjoys cool highland air and sweeping views across acres of vibrant tea fields and indigenous forest.

Founded in 1910 by AB McDonell, a pioneer of Kenya’s tea industry and one of the first to grow and sell tea commercially in the country, Kiambethu holds a significant place in Kenya’s agricultural history. Tea has since become one of the nation’s largest exports, and Kiambethu remains part of that origin story. Five generations of the founding family have lived on the farm, which is now run by his granddaughter Fiona Vernon, preserving both its heritage and warm, personal character.

The historic farmhouse sits within beautifully kept gardens, surrounded by rolling tea plantations and a private indigenous forest that is home to wildlife, including the striking Colobus monkey.

Guided tours are available from Thursday to Sunday, starting at 11 am, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the farm’s history, walk through the tea fields, and experience its tranquil atmosphere firsthand.

It was truly a wonderful experience. The atmosphere was peaceful and beautifully surrounded by nature, making it a perfect escape from everyday life. I would love to visit again in the future, especially with someone special, to share this memorable place together.

The lunch is delicious!! Honestly they should consider just opening up a restaurant/cafe. The tour itself is okay - I thought we would be walking around a lot more, but it’s mostly just standing in one spot in the tea field and listening to them talk. Then sitting on the lawn. Then a brief forest walk (with little to do with tea). I think I would’ve liked walking through the tea farm itself more. They feed you very well though.

Tigoni Life

Kiambethu Farm is an absolute gem in Tigoni. The moment you step onto the property, you can feel its rich history and peaceful charm. The farm has been in the same family for five generations and is now beautifully managed by Fiona Vernon, the granddaughter of the original tea pioneer, AB McDonell. The gardens are stunning, surrounded by acres of tea fields and forest where you can spot Colobus monkeys. The tour is both informative and relaxing, giving you a real sense of Kenya’s tea heritage. The 3-course lunch made with fresh farm ingredients is the perfect finish to the experience. Highly recommend visiting for a true taste of Kenyan history, nature, and hospitality.

An amazing experience as I enjoyed every single moment of it. You'll learn about the history of the farm and how the tea gets produced from the leaf to what you get already in your cup. I absolutely enjoyed the delicious lunch and homemade ice cream as well.

An experience I recommend 100%. The hospitality of the hosts, the explanation of the planting process, tea harvesting, and everything else is incredible. We finished the whole activity at around 2:45 pm. They give you a tour and explanation of their harvest fields. There is also tea tasting and some snacks to accompany it. Then comes lunch, and everything is delicious! Everything is very tasty, from the salad to the meat and dessert. What an experience! I would definitely do it again.
