Just a short drive from Nairobi, Kiambethu Farm in Limuru offers a serene and authentic glimpse into life on one of Kenya’s oldest tea estates. Perched at 7,200 feet above sea level, the farm enjoys cool highland air and sweeping views across acres of vibrant tea fields and indigenous forest.
Founded in 1910 by AB McDonell, a pioneer of Kenya’s tea industry and one of the first to grow and sell tea commercially in the country, Kiambethu holds a significant place in Kenya’s agricultural history. Tea has since become one of the nation’s largest exports, and Kiambethu remains part of that origin story. Five generations of the founding family have lived on the farm, which is now run by his granddaughter Fiona Vernon, preserving both its heritage and warm, personal character.
The historic farmhouse sits within beautifully kept gardens, surrounded by rolling tea plantations and a private indigenous forest that is home to wildlife, including the striking Colobus monkey.
Guided tours are available from Thursday to Sunday, starting at 11 am, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the farm’s history, walk through the tea fields, and experience its tranquil atmosphere firsthand.
